Senior Principal Design Engineer

  • To supervise design and analysis work on engine, vehicle and other engineering projects as required by the business.
  • Duties
  • To prepare and approve engineering programme quotations
  • To generate and implement design department procedures, resource and cost project plans
  • To monitor the timing and budgetry performance of design-only projects against project plans
  • To generate, evaluate and select design solutions for individual components, component systems and complete powertrains
  • To liaise with programme suppliers and external customers
  • To provide technical support to projects
  • To contribute to technical capability of the design department
  • To monitor and assess the performance and development of staff and mentor as required, identifying training needs
  • A Degree in a relevant Engineering discipline with extensive powertrain design experience or alternatively, an HND supported by relevant experience
  • A postgraduate qualification / Chartered status would be an advantage
  • Skills and Experience
  • Relevant experience in the field of powertrain design engineering gained within an automotive OEM or preferably consultancy environment is preferred
  • Good level of base engine knowledge and fundamental engineering principles is essential
  • Able to supervise and motivate others
  • Ability to lead and work as part of a team
  • Presentation and negotiation skills
  • Creative problem solving skills
  • Detail conscious with an appreciation of customer requirements
  • Competencies
  • Ability to work independently and/or as part of a team
  • Confidence to communicate effectively at all levels
  • Must be self-motivated and possess the drive to complete tasks in a timely manner and with appropriate attention to detail
  • Ability to work well under pressure and to strict time constraints
  • Flexibility and willingness to travel to customer sites for both long and short durations (including secondments)
