The Rottweil plant, located in southern Germany between the Swabian Alps and the Black Forest, is one of the largest piston producers in the MAHLE Group – and the biggest in Europe. From the forge and the foundry to machining and the production of test pistons – the vertical integration is one of its kind in the entire MAHLE Group.

It was set up in 1943, when MAHLE moved a portion of its piston production from Stuttgart to the "Rottweil spinning and weaving mill" Rottweil-Bühlingen. Construction on the building used to this day was begun in 1950, and production began in 1951. In 1987, the manufacturing hall was expanded to accommodate mechanical aluminum processing. A new foundry was erected in 1991. After the forge went into operation in 1999, series production of MONOTHERM® pistons began in 2005.
