Prototype Technician

  • This position resides in the Prototype Shop of the Lockport Engineering Center. The Prototype Shop has the lead in conversion of engineering ideas and designs into physical parts. It also supports the engineering department in the development of new products and processes.
  • Creates, design, and constructs tools and parts using a variety of materials including plastic, wood, steel, and aluminum.
  • Uses drawings and CAD designs to create prototype parts according to specifications.
  • Work will involve the modification and assembly of automotive HVAC modules prototypes, as well as the fabrication of metal or plastic component parts and tools.
  • Perform minor repairs to machinery
  • High school diploma (2 year associates or 4 year Bachelor’s degree in a technical field a plus)
  • 5+ years of experience in model making, prototyping, machining and/or tool making fields
  • Journeyman in one of the above areas preferred
  • Experience operating press brakes a plus
  • Experience injection molding equipment a plus
  • Experience in CAD design preferred (Solidworks or NX a plus)
  • Experience in additive manufacturing (i.e. 3D printing) in an industrial or commercial setting a plus
  • Creative, methodical, and a good problem solver
  • Able to work with minimal supervision
  • Knowledge in plastic and metal processing technologies
  • Skilled with hand tools and manual machining equipment
  • Able to read drawings and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Must have customer and quality focus
  • Able to work well with co-workers and engineers
