Engine Performance and Emissions Intern

  • Provides support to senior engineers in various engine and after treatment performance and emission assignments and projects.
  • Monitors engine performance and emissions metrics, analyzes how they relate to engine design, and identifies potential improvements via design changes.
  • Assists in creating test plans and reporting utilizing Design of Experiments.
  • Learns and performs vehicle testing. Conducts engine and emissions tests and collects data for analysis.
  • Ensures that the raw data sets taken from engine development projects have all necessary parameters needed for subsequent calculations.
  • Checks that the performance and emissions calculations applied to raw test data are appropriate, are correct, and are being completed efficiently.
  • Leverages latest techniques in data collection, data analysis, model development and running scenarios to research trends and identify patterns.
  • Designs, develops, implements, and validates test methods for troubleshooting products in order to catch failures, ensure the quality of the product.
  • Makes use of statistical tools when working with large data sets to perform analysis and reporting on various projects including warranty data trend analysis as well as implementing corrective action plans.
  • Supports the identification of customer/user needs through benchmarking, session based testing and user experience evaluation.
  • Re-creates problem failures to determine root cause by using of 8-D and 5-Why corrective action and problem solving skills and develops counterparts to investigate problems with pre-production and mass production design related issues.
  • Ensures the appropriate methodology, measurements, tools and quantitative techniques (e.g. data collection, computer simulation, statistics, etc.) are applied in projects.
  • Relates all performance and emissions trends back to core thermodynamic and chemistry fundamentals in order to determine plausibility.
  • Performs engineering based calculations, predictive analyses (potentially including both 1D and 3D methods) and CAD based design tasks to support engine design and design modification projects.
  • Utilizes SolidWorks Analysis Solver tools to perform FEA analysis of design components and provides an interpretation of the result outputs.
  • Ensures compliance to Corporate, Governmental, and Environmental standard like EPA & CARB.
  • Applies engineering principles, lean processes and analytical techniques to establish and continuously improve processes and products.
  • Recommends ideas to achieve best practices, apply new tools and techniques to find faster, smarter ways of looking at the data to perform exploratory analysis to improve decision making process.
  • Assists on design changes and coordinates communication within multiple team members to facilitate and track details on project progresses with Key Performance Indicators (KPI's) and takes action needed to achieve project plans and specifications by ensuring quality and company standards.
  • Subsequent to the reduction and analysis of the data and completion of analysis and design tasks, the employee will be expected to relay and explain the results to the project engineer and supervisor overseeing the work he or she has been tasked with. The employee will also be expected to occasionally liaise with suppliers.
  • Must be currently enrolled in a accredited college or university, with the course focus of Engineering.
  • Proven track record of achievements both academically and professionally, cumulative GPA of 3.2 or above.
  • Demonstrates strong verbal and written communication skills, with an ability to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization and effectively present information.
  • Strong mathematical background and understanding of statistics, deterministic optimization and simulation modeling techniques is required for data interpretation, manipulation and optimization.
  • Excellent at MS Office applications and willingness and quick adaptability to learn new software.
  • Working knowledge of Matlab, Minitab, SolidWorks, other analytical, statistical and simulation tools is a plus.
  • Proven ability in working collaboratively across cross-functional and multi-national teams in all organizational levels and deliver results under tight deadlines and fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent cognitive thinking, strong troubleshooting and problem solving skills with keen attention to detail.
  • Ability to show strong project management skills; demonstrate ability to strategize, prioritize and work on multiple tasks and meet timeliness.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Desire to work in hands-on lab and applied research environment.
